The Coromandel

The Coromandel Peninsula

A laid-back peninsula of golden beaches, rugged forested ranges, and coastal towns where nature and nostalgia meet.

Overview
The Coromandel Peninsula is one of New Zealand’s most beloved coastal escapes, renowned for its wild beauty, arty communities and relaxed holiday vibe. Just a few hours from Auckland, it feels worlds away, with misty kauri forests, hidden waterfalls, and beaches that belong on postcards. Whether you’re digging your own hot pool at the beach, hiking to a remote bay, or cruising through sea caves, the Coromandel is all about slowing down, exploring deeply, and reconnecting with nature.

See and Do

The local favourite
No trip to the Coromandel is complete without visiting Hot Water Beach, where underground geothermal springs bubble up beneath the sand. At low tide, bring a spade (or hire one nearby), dig your own pool, and soak in natural hot water just metres from the surf. It’s a quirky, crowd-pleasing experience that blends coastal fun with a uniquely geothermal twist. Arrive early for the best spots—and to catch the sunrise lighting up the coast.

A scene of pure natural beauty
A short drive from Hahei, Cathedral Cove is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and photographed beaches. Reached by a scenic walking track or boat/kayak tour, the beach features a soaring limestone archway, crystal-clear waters and views over the Mercury Bay. Swim, snorkel, or simply take in the view—this sheltered cove is a bucket-list location with an otherworldly feel, especially early in the morning or late in the day when the crowds have gone.

Adventures in nature
The Coromandel Coastal Walkway, at the northern tip of the peninsula, is a spectacular full-day hike between Stony and Fletcher Bays. Following historic packhorse routes along remote clifftops and through regenerating bush, it rewards with vast sea views, native birdlife, and a sense of serene remoteness. Elsewhere, explore the Coromandel Forest Park for kauri groves, waterfalls, and swimming holes—or take a ride on the quirky Driving Creek Railway, a narrow-gauge train weaving through replanted forest and past pottery sculptures high into the hills.
