Waiheke Island - Little O

Waiheke Island

A sun-soaked island escape just a short ferry from Auckland—where vineyards, beaches and artistic soul await.

Waiheke Island is a dazzling blend of coastal beauty and laid-back sophistication. Just 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland, it feels like another world—one where rolling vineyards meet golden beaches, and boutique galleries sit tucked into native bush. Known as the Island of Wine, Waiheke combines a strong creative spirit with some of New Zealand’s finest food and wine experiences. Whether you’re relaxing at a beachfront bistro, hiking coastal trails, or tasting Syrah with a sea view, Waiheke delivers serenity with a splash of indulgence.

See and Do

The local favourite
Mudbrick Vineyard & Restaurant is a Waiheke institution. Perched on a hill overlooking the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland skyline, it’s beloved for its romantic setting, award-winning wines and exceptional dining. Tour the vineyard, enjoy a long lunch in the restaurant or sip a glass on the lavender-scented terrace. Just down the road, Cable Bay offers a more modern vibe, with sculpture gardens, beanbag lawns and sharing plates that highlight local produce.

A scene of pure natural beauty
Onetangi Beach is one of Waiheke’s most beautiful stretches of sand—long, golden, and gently curving with clear blue waters. Popular for swimming, kayaking, and sunbathing, it’s also bordered by a handful of inviting cafés and restaurants. For something quieter, head to Palm Beach or Little Oneroa, both perfect for lazy afternoons. Inland, the Whakanewha Regional Park offers bush walks through native forest and wetlands, with lookout points and picnic spots aplenty.

Adventures in nature
While it’s best known for indulgence, Waiheke has a wild side too. EcoZip Adventures offers an exhilarating zipline experience across native forest and vineyard views. Or take to the water with a kayak or paddleboard rental, exploring quiet bays and coves. Hikers will love the Waiheke Te Ara Hura Trail, a 100km network that circles the island’s coastlines and ridgelines. With every turn, there’s a new view—cliffs, vineyards, beaches, and bays, stitched together by nature and time.

How to get there:

Arrive in Waiheke by passenger ferry, car ferry or by air with flights direct from Auckland Domestic Airport, or by helicopter from City Heliport at Mechanics Bay
